with Allison K. Summers
We head to Vienna, Austria to meet Francisco Webber, founder of multiple companies, Natural Language Understanding (NLU) expert and inventor of Cortical.io’s proprietary Retina technology – a technology applies the principles of cerebral processing to machine learning and natural language understanding (NLU) to solve real-world use cases related to big text data.
In this episode, we discuss big data and the problems that need to be solved to sort through and interpret that data. Francisco provides insight into semantic folding processing and how Cortical.io (www.cortical.io) is pushing forward smarter machine automation. At Cortical.io solutions are based on the actual meaning of text, rather than on statistical occurrences. We also discuss how the business was built and how they have harnessed a multi-national team to collaborate and innovate.
Francisco’s interest in information technology developed during his medical studies, when he was involved in medical data processing. Over the course of two decades, he explored search engine technologies and documentation systems in various contexts but became increasingly frustrated with the limitations of state-of-the-art statistical methods. In 2005 he founded Matrixware Information Services, which developed the first standardized global patent database. In 2007 he set up the Information Retrieval Facility with leading academic expert in information retrieval Professor Keith van Rijsbergen. Francisco recognized that the brain was the only existing reference system when it came to processing natural language. While closely following developments in neuroscience, he formulated his theory of Semantic Folding, which models how the brain represents language data.
Cortical.io provides natural language understanding (NLU) solutions that enable large enterprises to automate the extraction, monitoring, and analysis of key information from any type of text data reducing the time and human effort it takes to complete business-critical data search and review processes. Coritcal.io has been implemented at multiple Fortune 100 businesses and featured in the Economist, Harvard Business Review, Bloomberg and Gartner.
Cortical.io has offices in Europe (HQ in Vienna) and in the US (New York and San Francisco).
